LSUHSC-SHREVEPORT Needle Stick Protocol
1.Percutaneous Stick: Immediately clean with soap and water & Bleed the wound
Mucous Membrane Splash: Immediately flood the area with water2. Ask the nurse to obtain a blood sample from the patient who is the source. Two red top and one purple top tubes are needed from the source (neither a doctors order nor the patients permission is needed).
3. Be sure to label the blood sample test tubes with the patient (source) information. Bring the tubes and an ON-JOB INJURY REPORT signed by a supervisor to the 8th floor Occupational Health Clinic (Room H-8-8).
4. If it is after 4:30 p.m., or on a weekend or holiday, bring the tubes and ON-JOB INJURY REPORT directly to the Emergency Room.
5. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT FOR AN OPTIMUM RESPONSE, PROPHYLAXIS SHOULD BE STARTED WITHIN 1-2 HOURS OF THE EXPOSURE. Additionally, counseling should be offered regarding prophylaxis.
6. Return to the Occupational Health Clinic (H-8-8) within 3 days for follow up (the initial test results should be available at that time).
LSUHSC-S will cover the cost of post-exposure chemoprophylaxis of students exposed to HIV blood (needle sticks, etc.). This is a four-week course of post-exposure therapy involving Combivir for the basic regimen, plus the addition of a protease inhibitor, as Indinivir, when an expanded regimen is required. Such treatment will be coordinated, including follow-up, through the Occupational Health Clinic ( Employee Health ).
8. Follow up testing for HIV should be obtained through OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 6 months.
