LSUHSC-Shreveport - Office for Student Affairs

COUNSELING / THERAPY

You are the primary concern of the Office for Student Affairs, and Dr. Platt will counsel you in both academic and personal matters. Always feel free to go to this office. If you encounter an academic or a personal problem that Dr. Platt cannot help you with directly, he will do his utmost to put you in touch with qualified help.

Professional counseling and therapy services are available at no cost for all students who are enrolled full-time. Students who wish to take advantage of these services may request an appointment through Dr. Platt, or you may call directly (see the appropriate section under Student Health Program in this Handbook). There is a strict policy of confidentiality upheld by all parties.

The goal of the counseling service and the faculty is to assist you in defining and accomplishing your personal and academic objectives and to help you find alternatives to situations in your life that are not satisfactory to you. If you are having any nagging thoughts or problems, don't hesitate to seek help.

One final word: Students are often concerned with the stigma associated with "needing counseling." Learning about yourself and others and being willing to change is no less demanding a task than studying for courses in the curriculum. In the classroom, professors provide the means to focus your attention on the information to be acquired. Counselor / Therapists, with their experience in human development, may be able to assist you in your growth toward being the best person you can be.
