The Section is active in the investigation of multiple aspects of pulmonary diseases and in the care of critically-ill patients.  Current clinical research projects include the efficacy of diagnostic tests in the diagnosis of acute bacterial pneumonia, the evaluation of new antibiotics and antibiotic classes in the management of pulmonary infections, the use of innovative ventilatory modes in the management of patients with ARDS, cytokine and anti-cytokine manipulations in the treatment of sepsis and septic shock, novel therapeutic bronchodilating agents in asthma and COPD.  The Cardiopulmonary Research Laboratories in both LSUHSC and OBVAMC are involved in studies of the pulmonary circulation and the cellular aspects of membrane transport.  Current projects include the investigation of the application of nitrous oxide assays in bronchospastic disease, the investigation of water and solute movement across pulmonary capillaries and the pleura, and the inquiry into other mediators of pulmonary inflammation and repair.  A modern cell culture laboratory allows for studies of endothelial and mesothelial cell function and the effects of environmental changes on cell function.

Support for these research efforts come from the National Institute of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund, the Stiles Fund, the Veterans Administration Research Department and several pharmaceutical companies.
