A Welcome Message from the Chairman of
Pediatrics,
Joseph A. Bocchini, Jr.,
M.D....

I
am pleased that you are interested in learning more about our program and the
opportunities available to you in Pediatrics at the Childrens Hospital of Louisiana
State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.
Our pediatric graduate education
program is designed to provide training for those interested in practicing primary
pediatrics, as well as for those interested in subspecialty or academic pediatrics. Our
residents directly participate in the care provided to all of the infants, children and
adolescents managed at this facility. Thus, our residents, through a comprehensive
training program, are exposed to the appropriate balance of primary care patients,
subspecialty patients, and community based experiences necessary to achieve the skills
required to become an excellent pediatrician. Research opportunities are
also available.
Our philosophy is that the resident
learns best in an environment in which the resident has the primary patient
responsibility, with adequate supervision provided by faculty and senior housestaff as
required. Residents are given increasing independence as they gain experience and
demonstrate the achievement of the necessary skills. We believe that a close interaction
between faculty and residents is essential to resident education. Our faculty is committed
to resident education and to providing excellent up-to-date patient care.
Our program has grown
considerably in the past 15 years. We
offer eight categorical pediatric positions and
four Medicine/Pediatrics resident
positions at each level.
We offer fellowship training in Allergy-Immunology
and Neonatology. Our facilities continue to be modernized
and enlarged to meet patient care and training needs. A new outpatient
clinic building was completed in March 2001, which more than doubled our
outpatient space. A complete renovation of our inpatient general pediatrics
unit was finished in September, 2001. We have recently expanded
the PICU to 8 beds and the NICU to 40 beds.
Over the years, our residents have
contributed greatly to the advancement of our program. In turn, they have received a
strong education in general pediatrics which will serve as a solid foundation on which
they can build a rewarding pediatric career. We are proud of their many accomplishments in
private practice and in academic medicine. We look forward to continuing to work together
to build a program which will meet the changing needs of pediatric care and resident
education.
We are happy to answer any questions
you have, and would welcome your visit to our campus.
