Attendance Policy

All students are REQUIRED to attend morning report, daily rounds, scheduled lectures and conferences, night call duty, and clinical activities to which they are assigned.  Failure to attend will result in disciplinary action, reduction in your final grade, and referral to the Professionalism Committee.

Failure to report absences in the appropriate manner, as outlined below, will result in referral to the Professionalism Committee.

***If a student is absent for the Final Exam due to illness, injury, etc. he/she is required to call 675-7536 and leave a message AND submit a valid doctor's excuse to the Clerkship Director immediately upon returning to school. A make-up exam will be arranged through the Clerkship Director.***

If a student has more than 2 days of excused absences from the clerkship, make-up time will be required at the discretion of the clerkship director...usually hour for hour.  A grade of "I" (incomplete) will be given until the make-up time is completed.

Planned absences must be reported to the attending AND clerkship director on the first day of the rotation. All planned absences must be for legitimate reasons and must be approved by the attending AND clerkship director. If the explanation is insufficient, the absence will be unexcused and make-up time will be required. If the explanation is sufficient, the absence will be excused.

When working in the Ambulatory Care Clinic or Subspecialty Clinics, if you are ill or have a family or personal crisis, you must call Dr. Cedotal through the Pediatric department at 675-6081 and leave a message, on that day, to explain your absence.  When you call the Pediatric department, identify yourself as a Junior medical student, and identify where you are assigned that day (e.g. PACC, ACCESS, or the specific Subspecialty Clinic).

When working in the Nursery, if you are ill or have a family or personal crisis, you must call Dr. Bienvenu or Ms. Julian through the Nursery at 675-6988 and leave a message, on that day, to explain your absence.  When you call the Nursery, identify yourself as a Junior medical student and that you are assigned to the Nursery that particular day.

When working on the Pediatric Ward, if you are sick or have a family emergency, call the Pediatric department at 675-6081 and leave a message to explain your absence. When you call the Pediatric department, identify yourself as a Junior medical student, and identify where you are assigned that day ("Ward [color] team"). You also must notify your ward resident of your absence.  If you are scheduled for night call and become ill, you must find someone to switch your call.
