Sleep Medicine

Sleep Medicine is a relatively new subspecialty which involves a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of sleep and sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and parasomnias, from infants to senior citizens. In 2008, Sleep Medicine was designated a subspecialty under the American Board of Medical Specialties, the organization which now oversees board certification testing.

At the LSUHSC Sleep Disorders Center, patients are seen in clinic and sleep testing is arranged and followed up by LSUHSC Sleep Disorders Center Staff. All Sleep Medicine faculty in our program are board-certified in Sleep Medicine. For a complete list of the LSUHSC Sleep Disorders Center faculty, click here.

The LSUHSC Sleep Medicine program operates under the department of Neurology at LSUHSC-Shreveport. Clinic patients are seen in the Ambulatory Care Outpatient Clinic facility, across the street from the main hospital. Sleep studies are performed at our four-bed sleep diagnostics lab, located in the Neurophysiology area, on the eighth floor of the LSUHSC main hospital building.

History
The LSUHSC Sleep Disorders Center was founded in the early 1980s by Dr. Andrew Chesson, and has been nationally accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 1985. Dr. Chesson has been active in sleep medicine locally, regionally, and nationally. He was a founding member of the Louisiana Sleep Society. National activities have included serving on many committees of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine including its Education Committee, Standards of Practice Committee (including many years as chair of that committee), the AASM Board of Directors, and AASM President. He also served on the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Foundation Board of Directors, and the American Academy of Neurology section on sleep. Recently, he served on the steering committee tasked with creating a new manual used for the scoring of sleep studies. The program started training fellows in the practice of Sleep Medicine since the 1990s, and was granted ACGME Accreditation for its Sleep Medicine fellowship in 2007.
