University Hospital

The University Hospital is the major teaching site of the program. It serves as a tertiary care referral center for an area with a population exceeding one million people. Yearly, there are nearly 7,000 admissions to the Medicine Service; 65,000 Emergency Room visits, 45,000 visits to the General Medicine Clinics, and 27,000 visits to the subspecialty medical clinics. This large clinical base is the foundation of a superb "hands-on" patient care experience for residents.

The 455 bed hospital, which opened in 1953, has had a number of renovations and additions since becoming part of the LSU system in 1976. Two new outpatient clinics were erected at that time to accomodate teaching clinics. A ten story patient care tower was added in 1985, and allowed older parts of the hospital to be renovated for diagnostic services and specialized care units.

The clinical facilities include a 16 bed Medical Intensive care/Coronary Care Unit, a 36 bed telemetry unit, a sleep laboratory, imaging facilities, and a bone marrow transplantation unit. The Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and a new 160,000 square foot ambulatory care center was occupied in April, 2006. A state of the art Radiology facility, including a recently completed imaging center, enhance the residents' diagnostic capabilities on the Medicine Service. PET scanning is available in the adjacent Biomedical Research Institute.

Affiliated Hospital

Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Medical Center

Experience at the Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Medical Center provides an added dimension to the training program. The 197 bed tertiary care hospital is located on a beautiful tree-shaded campus about 4 miles from LSUHSC. There are over 4,200 admissions to the medical service yearly, and approximately 49,000 visits to the outpatient clinics. The Medical Center serves as a referral center for northern and central Lousisiana, southern Arkansas, and eastern Texas.

Internal Medicine residents rotate through the general medical wards and the Medical Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. In addition, there is a full range of clinical programs and medical subspecialty electives that are available to residents. Approximately 20% of the Department of Medicine faculty have their primary appointments in the VA system, making the hospital a key player in the training program.
