Medicine-Pediatrics Overview

Internal Medicine-Pediatrics is a combined program of four years. Our program is affiliated with the parent programs of Categorical Medicine and Categorical Pediatrics, which are both fully accredited by the ACGME. The goal of our program is to provide training that will allow the individual to pursue a variety of career goals: primary care, subspecialty practice, or academic medicine. The Med-Peds residents at LSUHSC participate fully in all activities of both departments: clinical, didactic, and social. During pediatric rotations, the residents function as full pediatric residents, attend pediatric conferences and lectures, and vice versa when on medicine.

Clinical Rotations
The general schedule for clinical rotations is outlained on the Training Schedule pages. Training on both services is provided primarlily at the 650 bed University Hospital. This institution has undergone several renovations since it became part of the LSU system in 1976, including the addition of two outpatient clincs and addition of a ten story 200 bed wing in 1985. Over 5,500 admissions to the Medicine Service occur each year, over 17,000 visits to the medical subspecialty clinics occur per year. The majority of Internal Medicine rotations are completed at the LSU Health Science Center's main hospital. Some inpatient rotations and clinics are also accomplished at a local private hospital, and at Overton-Brooks Veteran's Administration Hospital, both of which are about a five minute drive from the main hospital.

An average of 160 patients are admitted monthly to the general pediatric service, with over 300 admissions per month to the newborn nursery. The Outpatient general pediatric clinic average 2,500 visits per month. Pediatric inpatient rotations take place in the LSU Children's Hospital, located within the main LSUHSC building. This inpatient ward recently underwent complete renovation, and is now a beautiful, state-of-the-are facility. The Pediatric Clinic is located in a newly constructed Women's and Children's Clinic building located directly across the street from the main hospital. There are over 45 pediatric and 80 medicine faculty members who are firmly committed to help our residents develop the attitudes, technical skills, and knowledge necessary for a fulfilling career. Teaching occurs at the bedside, in general and specialty clinics and in electives. All orders are written by first year house officers under the supervision of senior residents and faculty members.
