Customize Your Toolbars

Ever wish you could have instant access to commands you use most often? Do you find that the toolbars are not quite helpful to you? Well, you can create your own toolbar or customize the ones that you use. The following example was done in Microsoft Outlook, but the principles can be applied to any Microsoft Office product.

Create a customize toolbar

1. Access the toolbar customize option (right click in toolbar area and click customize or go to view-toolbars-customize)

2. Click on New and type in a name for your toolbar (in this example we are using the name "test")

3. Once you have this done, you will be given a pop up window with the name you gave the toolbar. You will use this to add your commands.

Personalizing the toolbar (adding your special touch):

To access the commands available to you, click on the commands tab. They are categorized on the left and available commands are shown on the right.

You add icons by clicking and dragging to the taskbar window you created.

You can look through these commands and find the one(s) you use most often. In this example, three items are added to the taskbar.

1. contacts (under file)
2. move to folder (under edit)
3. add to junk senders list (under actions)

Now that desired commands have been added to the toolbar, we can further customize it by changing the icons (change button images) or having it display text only, etc. Right click on an icon you moved to the personalized toolbar and the following menu will appear.

* You can set icons back to original by choosing the reset button image.

In our example, we are going to change the icons for contacts. Right-click on the current icon and select Change button image. Choose another icon (in this case we will use ). Next, we are going to right-click on the icon again and choose image and text. We will add image & text setting to the Move to Folder icon (right click on and choose image & text). Next, we will add an icon to Add to Junk Senders by right-clicking on the text "add to Junk Sender's list". Go down to change button image and choose . When done, our test toolbar should look like this…

You can dock your toolbar by clicking and dragging the bar up to toolbar area or you can double-click on the bar next to the name and it will be docked for you.

From this point on, this toolbar will open each time you access the application you created it in.
