Downloading And Installing Outlook 2001 For The MAC


The newest version of Outlook for the Macintosh has many extra features not previously available.  With Outlook 2001, you can experience true cross-platform collaboration with Outlook for Windows users.  But, the best part is this software package is a free download from Microsoft.  If you are thinking about upgrading your version of Outlook on the Macintosh, follow these simple steps.

Requirements & Frequently Asked Questions

What are the system requirements for Outlook 2001?
Outlook 2001 requires a Power PC-based Macintosh computer running Mac OS 8.6 or later, with 32 MB of RAM and at least 1 MB of Virtual Memory. Approximately 40 MB of hard disk space will be needed for installation.

Do I need to have an Exchange Server to use Outlook 2001?
Yes. Outlook 2001is designed to be used as a client to the Microsoft Exchange Server.  It cannot be configured to send or receive mail from an Internet e-mail source.

Can I use profiles created with previous versions of Outlook for Macintosh?
Outlook 2001 works with profiles created with previous released versions of Outlook for Macintosh. However, profiles created with the public beta of Outlook 2001 are not compatible with the final version.

What network protocols can I use to connect to my Exchange Server?
We use the TCP/IP protocol.

Can I use Outlook 2001 and Outlook 8.2 on the same computer?
Yes. Outlook profiles made with released versions are compatible. Profiles created with the public beta are not compatible with the final version.

Are Personal Folders files (.pst) cross-platform compatible?
Yes. All of the Outlook 2001 data formats are identical to the formats used by the Windows versions. You can simply move your Personal Folders files from one machine to the other.

Before you download Microsoft Outlook 2001, check the memory, space & Operating System to make sure you meet the minimum requirements listed above

  1. Click on the apple icon.

  2. Select ABOUT THIS Computer.

  3. Check version /close

Add the domain

  1. Click on the apple icon

  2. Select CONTROL PANEL

  3. Select TCP/IP

  4. For search domain at bottom right, Type in LSUHSC.EDU & LSUMC.EDU

  5. Close Tcp/ip

Download Microsoft Outlook

  1. Open your web browser and go to http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/outlook2001/outlook2001.asp    

  2. You should be on the Mactopia website.

  3. Click on English (.bin) or English (.hqx) under the Download Now section

INSTALLING OUTLOOK

  1. Once Outlook downloads to your desktop, Double click on Microsoft Outlook 2001.smi  (this will put a outlook icon on the desktop with a disk)

  2. Double click on the MAC Hard Drive icon, to open it

  3. Copy the MS OUTLOOK 2001 folder (with clock) to the MAC Hard Drive root directory

  4. Double click the Outlook folder on the hard drive

  5. Double click on MS OUTLOOK icon with clock

  6. For the License, click accept

  7. Type in your name & organization, click OK, set the time and click OK

  8. You should see create a new Outlook profile menu.  For Type a name for the new profile: Press Delete  (for remove my outlook settings), type in your username. Example: jdoe

  9. Press tab.  For Microsoft Exchange Server: type in sh-exch.lsuhsc.edu/username where username is your userid.  Example: sh-exch.lsuhsc.edu/jdoe

  10. Press tab.  For Mailbox name: type in your username. Example: jdoe

  11. At the Is this computer always connected to a network screen, select Yes

  12. Click on Test Settings.  You may receive a menu asking you to type in your Username, Password, and Domain.  The domain is lsumc-master

  13. You should see a message saying “Congratulations! The tests were successful”, Click on Create Profile

Creating a desktop icon

  1. Select MS OUTLOOK icon

  2. Click on FILE, MAKE ALIAS

  3. Drag the OUTLOOK alias icon to the desktop

  4. To rename the Icon, single click on the name and change the name to Microsoft Outlook.  

Starting Outlook

To start Outlook 2001, double-click the Outlook icon in the group (or the alias on your desktop) and key in your userid on the line that says Username.  Key in LSUMC-MASTER for the domain, and enter your password.  Click OK when finished

To Add Personal Folders & Personal Address Book

  1. To add a personal folder file, click ADD and click NEW.  In the save as box, type in username.pst where username is your userid.  Example: jdoe.pst

  2. Click SAVE and click OK

  3. To add a personal address book file, click ADD and click NEW.  In the save as box, type in username.pab where username is your userid.  Example: jdoe.pab

  4. Click SAVE and click OK

Turn on the spelling, return receipts & display notification

  1. Click on EDIT

  2. Click on PREFERENCES

  3. Look at GENERAL on the left
