Do you use one of those cute little animated cursors or animated program plug-ins when you’re using your PC? One must admit that they are pretty cool and most of the time, amusing. However, this amusement can come at a rather large cost. Those who write these little trinket programs do not care about saving memory and\or resources therefore, your computer’s memory and resources suffer.
To check the Memory Usage for each running program on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP system, press the Ctrl, Alt & then Delete key. This will bring up a Windows Security window. Select the Task Manager option. This will open a Windows Task Manager window. Select the Processes tab. The information will be organized in columns. By comparing the Image Name item to the Memory Usage, you will have an idea of the resources each program uses to run.

As always, be careful not to end process any of the programs running if you are unsure what they are or what stopping them will do. When in doubt, contact the helpdesk.
If you are having problems with your computer’s speed and you use an animated cursor or plug-ins, turn them off or uninstall them and see if the situation improves.
