Setting Your Password Protected Screen Saver


Wish that you could keep others off of your computer when you leave your desk for a while? Don’t want to turn your computer off every time you leave your desk?  Well, there’s a way to keep them out without shutting down your computer and going through that long boot up process.  Just activate a password protected screen saver!

Description

Windows contains several screen savers from which you can choose.  You control the length of time the computer should register as idle and whether or not you want the screen saver to be password protected, before the screen saver begins. 

For Windows 95, 98, and 2000 users

1. Click the right mouse button on any portion of the desktop (except on icons). The display menu appears.

2.  Left click the properties command.  The display properties dialog box will appear. 

3.  Click the tab labeled Screen Saver. 

 

4.      In order to see a list of the screen savers on your computer, left click on the drop down list box, located directly below the
Screen Saver Prompt.  

      Note:  When (None) is selected, no screen saver will be active on your system.

  1. If you choose an animated screen saver and it moves relatively fast, you can adjust their speed by clicking on the settings button.  On some systems, you may even have the option to adjust the number of animated items that appear on the screen saver screen. 
  1. The preview button allows you to view, full-screen, the screen saver if you would like a better preview than the one in the small screen on the display properties box. 
  1. Left clicking on the up/down arrow keys, located directly beside the wait prompt, allow you to select the amount of minutes you would like for your computer to remain idle before the screen saver activates itself. 
  1. In order to password protect your screen saver, left click the checkmark box labeled password protected.  

Note:  On Windows 95 & 98 machines, you are required to check the change box, enter a password for windows screen saver, confirm the new password, and click ok.   

Note:  Windows 2000 machines will automatically use your LSUMC-MASTER password as the screen saver password. 

  1. In order to lock your new screen saver settings, left click on the Apply and OK buttons. 
  1. In order to deactivate your screen saver password, you must:  1) Windows 95/98 machines, moving the mouse key will bring up the box where the password is to be entered.  2) Windows 2000 machines, you must hit control-alt-delete in order to bring up the box that allows you to enter your password. 

Congratulations, you have successfully configured your password-protected screensaver!
