Word 97 and Excel 97

These are the steps for updating your Office 97 versions of Word and Excel. Some of these steps you may not need to use depending on which version of 97 you have installed. Before installing this or any other program, you should always run maintenance on your machine. Please refer to the article "Cleaning Up My Machine" for instructions on running scandisk and defrag. In addition, it is highly recommended that you close any open programs, including the MS Office Toolbar.

  1. Open up Word or Excel
  2. Click Help on your toolbar and then click "About Microsoft Word" or "About Microsoft Excel"
  3. You will see 'Microsoftâ Word' (or Excel) and one of these versions: SR-1, SR-2, or nothing at all.

This will be your 1st guide. If SR-2 is indicated, smile, your software is up to date. If nothing is indicated, you will have to install both SR1 and SR2 patches to make your software up-to-date. And now the tricky one, if SR-1 is indicated, you will need to run Office Version Checker to determine if SR-2 will update properly. When you run the version checker, it will give you either an OK to install SR-2, or that it cannot find the Office 97 installation. If the later, you will have to follow the same steps as if nothing was indicated.
