At this present time, there are no Y2K patches for MS Word 6.0 and MS Excel 5.0.

WORD 6.0

According to Microsoft, this product is compliant with acceptable deviations from Microsoft's standard of compliance. An acceptable deviation does not affect the core functionality, data integrity, stability, or reliability of the product.

Recommendation: In general, all 2 digit dates for year are assumed by the program to be in the 20th century. Use 4 digits for the year in all aspects of the program. In addition, change the short date format of your operating system (see article regarding the Windows operating system earlier in this newsletter) and the short date format in your program, if applicable, to be a 4 digit year (ex: change from mm/dd/yy to mm/dd/yyyy).

EXCEL 5.0

According to Microsoft, this product is compliant with acceptable deviations from Microsoft's standard of compliance. An acceptable deviation does not affect the core functionality, data integrity, stability, or reliability of the product.

Recommendation: Use 4 digits for the year in all aspects of the program. In addition, change the short date format of your operating system (see article regarding the Windows operating system earlier in this newsletter) and the short date format in your program, if applicable, to be a 4 digit year (ex: change from mm/dd/yy to mm/dd/yyyy).

WORDPERFECT 6.1 FOR WIN 3.X

According to Corel, WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows 3.1x is "compliant with minor issues". Those issues include the use of date assumptions in the Document Summary feature and in Tables. If you enter a two-digit year in a Corel WordPerfect 6.1 Document Summary, the following century assumptions are made:

If you enter a two-digit year in a date-formatted cell of a Corel WordPerfect 6.1 Table, the year always defaults to the twentieth century; i.e. 00 = 1900.

To ensure the dates you enter are unambiguous, we recommend changing the Short Date Format in Windows 3.1x to include the century, and always entering dates with four-digits for the year.
