ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP

The first year is devoted primarily to the development of competence in clinical infectious diseases, initiation of a research project, and first hand experience in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory.  The second year is devoted to a combination of clinical infectious diseases and research; a Pediatric Infectious Disease elective is strongly encouraged.  The clinical infectious disease rotations and research experiences are interspersed in blocks.  A faculty mentor selected by the Fellow will guide the clinical and basic research activities.  The faculty mentor has major responsibility for providing research instruction and guidance.

CLINICAL experience is gained through consultant rounds at the LSU Health Sciences Center’s University Hospital and at the Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Medical Center in Shreveport.  Generally, a medical resident and one or two fourth year medical students will comprise the team along with the Fellow and the Infectious Diseases Faculty Attending.  The consult team generally has ten to fifteen new consultations per week or approximately 50 per month.  Rotation on the Pediatric Infectious Diseases consult service is provided as an elective experience in the second year of the Fellowship. Each fellow will see over 450 consults during their 12 months of rotation on the consult service.

The Fellow gains hands-on experience in diagnostic clinical microbiology by working at the bench in the University Hospital’s Microbiology and Mycobacteriology-Mycology laboratories for part of each day during a four-week period.  Part of this period is also spent in the Clinical Virology and PCR laboratories.  In each laboratory, the Fellow will receive a personal tutorial by masters and PhD level microbiologists.

The Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology expertise expected of an Infectious Diseases specialist are gained during a separate rotation in the Infection Control Department that includes rounding with the University Hospital nurse epidemiologists and by the Fellow’s participation in active hospital epidemiology investigations.  In addition, Fellows are members of the LSU Hospital Infection Control and Antibiotic Review Committees.

Weekly clinics staffed by the ID faculty and Fellows at LSUHSC include two Viral Therapeutics Clinics for viral hepatitis treatment and Infectious Diseases Clinics at the LSUHSC and the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center. In addition, the Viral Diseases Clinic (VDC) for HIV care has half-day physician coverage Monday through Friday for over 1000 total patients living with HIV/AIDS. Each Fellows has a weekly hlaf-day continuity clinic at the VDC.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Directions to LSUHSC-S
Located at 1501 Kings Highway, just west of Exit 205 off Interstate-49, the LSU Health Sciences Center Medical Center is easily reached by car.

Where can I park?
Parking is normally easy at most of the public parking lots on the North side of Kings Highway next to Subway or directly in front of the main hospital entranc,e or west of the Hospital on Linwood Ave in the Vistors' Lot.

Can I fly?
Shreveport is served by Delta, American, Continental, and Northwest airlines. The medical school and airport are an easy 15-minute drive apart.

Directions to the Infectious Disease Office
The simplest way to get to the Infectious Disease Office, Room 6-249 in Building B (Medical School), is park at one of the commercial lots on Kings Highway or Linwood Ave (Exit 205 on Interstate-49), find your way into one of the main buildings and go to the 6th floor of the Medical School.

Overnight Lodging in Shreveport
Overnight lodging in Shreveport is easy to find at numerous national chains that include the Sheraton, Marriott Courtyard, Best Western Chateau Suite Hotel, Richmond Suites, Hampton Inn, LaQuinta, Clarion, Holiday Inn Express and Super 8. Hotel-and-Casino's such as Sam's Town, Eldorado, Horseshoe, Diamondjacks and Boomtown offer good accommodations that are closer to the riverfront.  My recommendation is stay somewhere closer to shopping, dining and nightlife and don’t worry about staying as close as possible to the Medical School as most places close to the medical school are not as readily accessible to those areas of shopping and nightlife. Prices and services vary, and all have web sites with contact information for reservations. Mentioning that you are on business with the LSU Medical School may get you a discount at some of these.
