About Us

A BRIEF HISTORY of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport shows that it was founded in 1965, admitted its first class in 1969, and graduated its first class in 1973.  Since 1975, entering classes have numbered 118 medical students.  Graduates of the Fellowship in Infectious Diseases, which was started in 1977, have entered both academic medicine and clinical practice.  Since its inception, the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

CLINICAL FACILITIES include the LSU Health Sciences Center’s University Hospital and the Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Medical Center.  The University Hospital is a 450-bed teaching hospital, owned and operated by Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center; its chief executive is the Dean of the School of Medicine.  The Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Medical Center in Shreveport is a 100-bed general hospital, and is integrated into the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center’s Fellowship program.
