Department of Family Medicine and Comprehensive Care

Family Practice Residency in Alexandria

Our residency provides outstanding clinical exposure in a community-based, unopposed setting with an emphasis on hands-on procedural training. Residents see continuity patients in a well-equipped stand -alone Family Practice Center and see their inpatients at the two local tertiary care community hospitals, Rapides Regional Medical Center and Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. Huey P. Long Medical Center and the VA Medical Center in Alexandria are significant secondary training hospitals utilized for certain rotations.

Residents see their continuity patients in the FPC for one half day per week during the PGY-1 year, two half days during the PGY-2 year, and three half days during the PGY-3 year. Residents learn primary care procedures in the FPC including EGD, colonoscopy, colposcopy, cervical cryosurgery, vasectomy, neonatal circumcision, treadmill exercise stress testing, and dermatologic surgery. The curriculum also includes five hours of lecture per week on Tuesday afternoons presented by family practice and specialty faculty.
