Patients should always be instructed to use a spacer with their metered dose inhaler (MDI).  Repsiratory services at LSUHSC can be consulted to provide spacers and education in their use to a patient.
 
To Use MDI with spacer: 

1.  Shake MDI well. 

2.  Attach MDI to spacer. 

3.  Exhale normally. 

4.  Place mouthpiece in mouth. 

5.  Actuate MDI. 

6.  Take a slow deep inspiration and then hold breath for 5-10 seconds. 

7.  Remove mouth from spacer and exhale. 

8.  Wait 2-3 minutes before taking next puff.
