Who should attend CPTP classes?

All state employees. Supervisors and managers attend any classes, with special interest in management development and supervisory training. Non-supervisors attend general application classes.

All classes are designed to upgrade professional, technical, or managerial skills

When and where are the classes held?

Classes are offered on-site at LSUHSC-S in the Medical School Conference Center, G-221.

Class times are 8:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Occasionally classes are available at other state agencies, such as DHH, Northwest Developmental School or National Guard Armory in Bossier City.

Who conducts the training classes?

The Comprehensive Public Training Program is a section within the state’s Division of Administration. The Department of State Civil Service is the co-sponsor of the training program. The primary instructors for the program are staff of the Public Management Program at Louisiana State University. Civil Service staff present courses on Civil Service Essentials for Being an Effective Supervisor, Performance Planning and Review, Documenting for Discipline, Controlling Absenteeism and Tardiness, Common Myths that Affect Good Supervision, and training for Human Resource professionals.

Is there a fee to attend the classes?

No, there is no fee charged to the employee to attend classes. However, each state agency is assessed a fee paid to CPTP based on the number of classified employees.

How do I know if I have to take mandatory supervisory training classes?

Those employees designated by their job title by Civil Service are notified by HRM Staff Training and Development that they are to participate in the mandatory supervisory training, and have three years to complete all courses.

Are all classes “live”?

No, there are on-line classes, and there are distance learning classes which have several sites across the state at one time with one instructor.

Do I get CEUs for attending CPTP classes?

CPTP classes may be used for CEUs for some professions. Each profession has its own criteria for determining appropriate courses and providers of CEUs.

Contact CPTP at (225) 342-4739 whenever you need further information about CEUs.
