Residency Training Program in Urology

The Urology Department includes a fully accredited Urology Residency Training Program. The approved training format consists of one year of general and subspecialty surgical training followed by four years of Urology, i.e., a "1 + 4" format. The Urology Residency Training Program was begun in 1947 and has maintained full accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our Urology service is approved for eight residents in its four-year program with two residents at each level of training. Urology residents rotate among three training centers, ( LSU University Hospital, Overton Brooks VAMC,and Christus/ Schumpert Medical Center). The Department of Urology has administrative offices and adjacent research space in the LSU University Hospital and has an in-patient ward, Pediatric and Urologic Oncology Sections, and a busy outpatient facility.

The clinical Urodynamic Research Laboratory and Endourology Suites are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art fluoroscopic tables and ultrasonographic and urodynamic equipment, microwave thermotherapy and EMG technology. The latest generation Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scanning facilities is located in the adjacent Biomedical Research Building and is available for clinical use and research. Several clinical and basic science research programs have developed with emphasis in the areas of urologic oncology, endourology, stone management, voiding dysfunction/ urodynamics, and pediatric urology. The training program also utilizes the nearby full-service Overton Brooks Veterans Administration Hospital, with supervision by full-time faculty, and Christus/ Schumpert Medical Center, a full-service private hospital, for additional clinical material. The entire spectrum of urologic surgery is performed at LSUHSC-S and its affiliated training institutions.

The full-time urologic academic faculty is dedicated to resident and student teaching and supervision. Regularly scheduled didactic educational and training activities include daily Teaching Rounds, weekly Grand Rounds, Monthly Seminars, Death and Complication Conferences, and Journal Club Reviews. Joint clinical teaching conferences are also held with Radiology, Medical Oncology, Urologic Pathology, the Urology Billing Section, and Pediatrics. The faculty works closely with the residents and medical students in the operating room, clinic, and inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. In addition to the full-time faculty, the clinical faculty actively participates in our teaching efforts and is an integral part of the program.

This program offers broad clinical experience, supplemented by regularly scheduled didactic teaching activities to provide a unique exposure to all aspects of Adult and Pediatric Urology. Academic projects, both in clinical and research laboratory areas are encouraged. This training program will appeal to those with a natural inquisitiveness and to those who seek a program where direct personal participation and commitment are highly valued.
