This is a four-year program,
fully accredited by the ACGME. On average, 3 new residents enter the program annually, allowing
for a total resident component of twelve. The training venue is Louisiana State University Health
Sciences Center in Shreveport, a tertiary care, 400-bed teaching hospital.
One year of clinical experience is required,
to be fulfilled before joining the program, or after the first year.
With a normal faculty strength of 15 we provide
training and supervision in all aspects of the specialty, including Angiography & Interventional,
Chest, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Emergency, Musculoskeletal, Pediatric Radiology and
Neuroradiology, Breast Imaging, Body Imaging, Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound. Our equipment
includes advanced angiography & interventional, ultrasonography, computed tomography, digital
fluoroscopy as well as two brand new, fully equipped 1.5 T GE MR Scanners. We are moving toward
a filmless environment, and almost all image interpretation is currently on PACS (Picture Archiving
and Communications System). Residents receive intensive training with increasing participation
and responsibility as he/she progresses throughout the 4 years. This includes 'hands-on' experience
in procedures such as abscess drainage, stenting, embolizations, diagnostic angiography, arthrography,
image guided biopsies and myelography.
On average, 2 conferences are offered daily.
These are conducted by our faculty, members of other clinical departments and by the residents.
Attendance at regularly scheduled weekly Grand Rounds and MIDAT (Minimally Invasive Diagnostic
and Therapeutic Center) conferences earns CME credits. Participation at the 6-week Radiology-Pathology
Correlation Course of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, DC, is an
integral part of the program.
Research is mandatory and
ranges from simple case presentations culminating in comprehensive grant-supported projects.
All departmental and institutional resources are available to this end. We stress a very close,
and mutually beneficial relationship with all clinical departments, and the BRI (Biomedical
Research Institute) next door, who are in charge of the PET Scanner and cyclotron.
The Section of Radiation
Oncology is part of our Department, and is equipped with a state-of-the-art Gamma Knife. Applications
to the Residency Program are invited, and should be submitted through ERAS.
