The pathology residency at
LSUHSC Shreveport consists of 24 months of Anatomic Pathology and 24 months of Clinical Pathology.
A fifth or credentialing year is required by the American Board of Pathology, and may consist
of a year of a clinical discipline in medicine, a year of research, or an additional year of
pathology. Anatomic pathology includes autopsy pathology, surgical pathology, cytopathology,
forensic pathology, neuropathology, and dermatopathology. Clinical pathology consists of hematology,
blood banking, clinical chemistry, microbiology, cytogenetics, molecular pathology, and immunopathology.
A yearly research project is required for each resident. Training is done mainly at LSU Hospital,
although the VA Medical Center, Willis-Knighton Medical Center, and Christus Schumpert Medical
center may be utilized for portions of the training. The program accepts 2 residents per year,
for a total of 10 residents. Fellowships are available in Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology.
There are twenty core faculty members and numerous part time faculty members. Applications are
accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
