1. Freedom from competition with
residents in other primary care specialties. The Family Practice Residency is the only
residency program based at E. A. Conway. There are no Internal Medicine, Pediatric, or junior
OB/GYN or Surgery residents at E.A. Conway.
2. A large patient population with
diverse medical problems. E.A.Conway provides health care for the medically under-served
population of northeast Louisiana, with an estimated service population of 350,000 people.
3. A strong "hands-on"
training experience. As residents progress through the program they become increasingly
independent, and they become proficient in many different procedures.
4. Frequent conferences and teaching
rounds, and an extensive medical library. The forty staff physicians at E.A.Conway all
hold faculty appointments at LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport, and many participate
in research. Junior and senior medical students regularly rotate at E.A.Conway. This provides
the stimulating academic environment that is critical to quality residency training in Family
Practice.
5. Newly-opened, modern facilities.
A new $41 million inpatient and outpatient facility was opened in 1987 and provides a modern,
attractive environment for patient care and residency training.
