HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP TRAINING

Teaching, research and patient care components:

The Hematology/Oncology section of the Department of Medicine at LSUHSC in Shreveport is the most active section in the conducting of both basic and clinical research. We participate in the Southwest Oncology Group, clinical trials (one of the busiest institutions within the group). As well as group trials, we are actively involved with the pharmaceutical industry in new drug development and have numerous in house protocols authored by faculty and fellows. The basic science laboratories run the gamut of molecular biology as well as research. Fellows are allowed to spend up to 18 months in basic or clinical research projects. The patient care responsibilities during the training program allow for excellent training in a wide variety of pathology at the University and VA Medical Center. All hematologic and oncologic problems are covered. In addition to clinical training via patient care, a detailed curriculum is in place to cover all aspects of hematology/oncology. Faculty are actively involved in teaching as well as supervising all clinical duties of the fellows. The fellows also have responsibilities for teaching the Internal Medicine house staff and medical students of the university.
